Windows 8 Consumer Preview and F-Response

Mar 01, 2012

Yesterday (February 29, 2012) Microsoft announced the release of Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Available as a free download it was designed to give potential customers and current Windows users an opportunity to field test the new upcoming operating system.

Regardless of our opinion of the Metro User Interface or missing Windows Start button, we wanted to make sure that F-Response products would work in Windows 8 as it currently stands, in particular the subject or "target" based executables.

To that end we built a very simple and heavily resource constrained virtual machine and inserted F-Response TACTICAL. As you'll see below, while it took a bit of manuevering to get to the Desktop and figure out how to execute the software, the Subject executable preformed exactly as it does under Windows 7. In fact we enabled Physical Memory as well and confirmed all targets work and actually point to valid disks and pmem.

So, while the jury is still out on Windows 8 Consumer Preview, F-Response customers shouldn't worry about Windows 8 target machines they may (or may not) see in the future.

Enjoy!
